[Hosting] Custom 50x error page editor in the Hub

3

A simple visual editor in the Hub to design custom 50x server error pages which could be automatically applied to all connected sites.

The Hub could also include an alert mechanism which sends a message to us to instantly notify us of any 50x errors occurring, separate from the existing uptime monitoring.

    Hello Julian

Take note that when a site throws a 5XX error page, the way that the page looks depends entirely of the hosting provider. It may not be possible to customize 5XX error pages by just using The Hub connected to that site. That being said, it’s possible to configure the 4XX and 5XX error pages of sites under our hosting, which requires to add HTML files in the root directory of each site, each one containing the HTML code that you want the visitors to see when these error pages appears:
    https://vvpmudew.com/docs/hosting/overview/#customize-error-pages

And although The Hub doesn’t have an user interface to customize these files, The Hub provides tools to access each site’s folder and create each file using the Hub’s File Manager. Please check this feature and let us know if it fills your needs.

These kind of error messages can appear due to many circumstances, for example, when a bot crawler is blocked from accessing the site due to Firewall or SEO configuration. We have the Uptime Monitor in order to find when a site is generally not accessible to visit, which can notify you when this happens. Have you experienced an scenario where the Uptime Monitor was unable to detect that the site was not accessible while your visitors saw a 5XX error message?

    Kind regards,
    Jair.

Exactly, that’s why I propose a tool in the Hub that let’s you design those pages and push them to the hosted sites’ root directories. That way we can manage it from a single location. Manually uploading and updating those pages would be way too time consuming.

It’s not necessarily about the error alert but rather about having a consistently designed branded error page for these types of errors.

    Hi Julian

Thank you for further explanation, I agree with your point on the branding, a single “config” such as we already have for plugins could be a pretty nice idea.

We forwarded it to our product team. Note that we can’t guarantee or give an estimated time on implementing it but we will keep monitoring the votes.

I don’t think that would be the best approach because when a server error occurs, WordPress won’t be available to serve the error page. It has to be done at the server level. The 50x related error pages should go in a web-accessible directory like the document root or a dedicated error pages folder.

    Hi Keith ,

    I hope you’re doing well.

As Julian mentioned, a plugin solution wouldn’t help here; if PHP crashes, the plugin(Branda) won’t be able to handle this message.

The best solutions would be the error page editor from the Hosting panel in the Hub, which is the feature request here, or the solution mentioned by Patrick regarding using OpenClaw, which would help you to edit this error page.

    Best Regards,
